Originally named the Wild Duck, the brigantine was renamed after the Battle of Lexington. Under this flag, Captain John Barry (first Flag Officer of the USN) captured the Edward, a tender to the British man-of-war Liverpool brought the prize into the port of Philadelphia. This was the first capture in battle of an armed vessel from the enemy. Lexington's ensign was a variant of the Continental Colors, with stripes of red, white and blue. The colors of the thirteen stripes varied. It has been noted that red/white, red/green, and red/white/blue stripes were used.
