Meaning:
Kahla is surrounded by the municipalities of SüdlichesSaaletal Administrative Community and is its seat, but it is not part of the community. In 1184 commissionaires of the Counts of Orlamünde lived in a castle near a church, dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch. The existence of the church was confirmed by a priest in 1227. In 1283 the area was owned by the Lords of Lobdeburg, in 1333 by the Counts of Schwarzburg, in 1369 by the Wettin kin, in 1485 by its Ernestine branch. A settlement of merchants with a church, dedicated to St. Nicolas, developed near the bridge across the Saale River since the 12th century. In the 13th century a walled city was built. The existence of a council is proven since 1368. The council also held the low level cognisance and the high level cognisance since 1487. After 1525 the city was punished by the Elector of Sachsen, because the city supported the uprising of peasants. The city was acquired by the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar in 1572 and by the Duchy of Sachsen-Altenburg in 1603, to which it belonged until 1918. The pattern of the arms is based on city seals, the oldest was made in 1399. The pattern remained basically the same during the centuries but changed in details. Otto Hupp (1925) painted the inescutcheon impending and bigger on the dexter flanch, in times of the GDR the background was blue, the dress red and the coat white. There was no nimbus and the inescutcheon was smaller. The saint is St. Margaret, the local patron saint, recognisable by her attributes dragon and crosslet (on top of the staff). The inescutcheon displays the arms of the Counts of Schwarzburg. The star is a mere decorating element.

The arms were redesigned between 1993 and 2004, as they are mentioned in §2(1) of the local Hauptsatzung, version 2 September 2004. The banner is mentioned in §2(2).
