Edmonton Elks Logo Flag
On this page:
The professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta, is now re-branded as the "Edmonton Elks," but was previously known as the "Edmonton Eskimos." The team is one of the three community-owned teams in the CFL. The club competes in West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
"The Edmonton Elks are the most successful franchise of the Canadian Football League modern era." (source) Since 1949, for almost 71 years, the community-owned team was known continuously by the name of the Edmonton Eskimos, popularly called the Eskimos, Esks, Eskies, and even named "The Evil Empire" in the 1970s thru the 1990s (This was all because of their CFL league dominance). The Edmonton Eskimos won the Grey Cup championship 14 times during that time. This included a "three-peat" (3 championships in a row) between 1954 and 1956 and "five-peat" (5 in a row) between 1978 and 1982. Under the "Eskimos" name their most recent Grey Cup Championship was in 2015. It was the 103rd Grey Cup between the Ottawa Redblacks and the Eskimos. The game was played at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the Eskimos won the contest 26-20.
In 2020, bowing to pressure from their major sponsor, Belairdirect, the team would officially drop the term "Eskimos," temporarily adopting the names "Edmonton Football Team" and the "EE Football Team" for the 2021 season. The term "Eskimo" was felt to be an offensive term for the First Nation Inuit tribe and no longer politically correct. During this time, the franchise was determined to chose a new nickname starting with the letter "E" because they would be able to use their existing popular EE logo. They eventually choose the throwback name of the "Edmonton Elks" which historically was first used by the Edmonton Football Club back in 1922. Thus, for the 2022 season, a hundred years later, they officially have re-adopted the name of "Edmonton Elks."
Looking back, the sport of Rugby-Football has had a long history in Edmonton. An unaffiliated team called the Edmonton Rugby Foot-ball Club played in the Alberta Rugby Football League in 1895. In 1908 their team name was changed to the Edmonton "Esquimaux." In 1910 the name of the Edmonton Eskimos had its first use. In 1922 the name Edmonton Elks made its first brief appearance during that single 1922 season.
In the following years the local Edmonton team would go back and forth using a series of different names as the team folded, reorganized, returned, then folded again. They were the Elks (1922), the Edmonton Boosters (1930-1932), the Edmonton Hi-Grads (1936), the Edmonton Civics (1914), and the Edmonton Canucks (1919-1925 and 1928-1929), to name a few of their lesser known names. Since 1949, however, they have been the Edmonton Eskimos.
The Eskimos/Elks have won the Grey Cup more than any other team except the Toronto Argonauts. They have amassed more CFL championships than any other team since the CFL was formed in the 1950s. The team has been in every playoffs for 37 consecutive years from 1927 to 2005, a North American professional sport record.
The Elks today play their home games in Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium. Their team colours are green, gold, and white. Their fans use new modern team nicknames such as the "The Double-Es" and "The Herd." Even their mascots "Punter" and "Spike" have a new look.

These commemorative flags celebrate the 14 Grey Cup championships of the Edmonton in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1993, 2003, 2005, and most recently 2015). These are the equivalent of 14 American NFL Superbowl victories. With 14 Grey Cup wins in the Edmonton franchise's history, only the Toronto Argonauts have more. The Edmonton teams have also been the West Division Champions 23 times.

A throwback or retro flag uses one the older Edmonton logos in its design. Naturally they can also be an actual antique flags, rather than ones of modern manufacture. These are examples of these retro type flags.

Fan Flags are commercially manufactured flags either officially approved or licensed by a team or, unfortunately, in some cases, they might be illegal "ripoffs." There are also non-commercial one-of-a-kind handmade fan variants also in use. We attempt to show only licensed flag designs here. They come in many styles, and many manufacturer variants exist.
Elks Fan flag designs are available with various horizontal strip patterns and design elements, but these flags all use some common design elements: a team logo, and the team colours of green, gold, and white.

Helmet-style flags done in the team colors on different field designs are made for most CFL teams and have become very popular in recent years. Here are two examples.

These Elks fan flags are less for displaying at games or on flag poles, but more for the walls of home "man cave."
