The Band

The Unkechaug are a Native American nation living on the Poospatuck Reservation, on New York's Long Island. A photo showing their flag can be seen at www.flickr.com.

The Unkechaug, also sometimes informally referred to as the Poospatuck, and in earlier times as the Patchogue, are officially recognized by the State of New York (in their original language Unkechaug was the actual term for their people; Poospatuck was merely the name of the location where their present reservation is situated). Their reservation, the smallest in New York State, is located in Mastic, Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County.

The Flag

The flag is green with the nation's seal in the center. The seal (with slight color variations) can be seen at dingo.care2.com. It has a schematic profile of a turtle seen from above; the turtle's shell is has 4 fimbriated corners. Upper left is blue with a whale colored white; upper right is yellow with a black sun bearing a white ring; lower left is black with a white stag; and lower right is red with a black and white ear of maize. On the flag the outer edge of the turtle and the fimbriation is green, while in the linked image they are white. The background color of the seal is black, and the outer ring of the seal is white, in both cases (thin black lines separate the ring into quarterly sections at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock). Within the ring are upper case UNKECHAUG NATION above, and 1659 below. [A third slight color variation- white fimbriation and green background- can be seen at newyorkhistoryblog.org].

If any are interested in the green vinyl banner shown beneath the flag, the symbols are the Unkechaug seal, the logo of the Native American Business Alliance of Long Island, and the seal of the Shinnecock Nation.
