According to Lisseth Medina, "Diario
El Tiempo", the flag of the municipality of Urdaneta
will be inaugurated on 18 December 2006, 9 AM, on Bolívar Square
in the parish of La Queberada. The flag was designed on 24 May
2006 by inhabitants of the parish of Santiago, as reported by Pr.
José Giro, from the Bolivarian School “Francisco
Briceño Araujo”, La Mesa de Esnujaque parish. The final
design of the flag incorporated suggestions from inhabitants of
all the parishes forming the municipality, that is Jajó,
Tuñame, Cabimbú, La Mesa de Esnujaque and Santiago.
According to the municipal
website, Urdaneta (59,095 inhabitants) is located in the
State of Lara. It is made (from west to east) of the parishes of
Xaguès, Siquisique, San Miguel and Maroturo. Siquisique, founded
in 1534 in the valley of Río Tocuyo, is the most inhabited
parish of the municipality. Urdaneta was the place of two
battles, in 1812 (Battle of Baragua, during the Independence War)
and 1959 (Battle of Siquisique).
Like the municipality of Rafael Urdaneta,
located in the State of Tachira, Urdaneta is named after a hero
of the independence of Gran Colombia and Venezuela. General
Rafael Urdaneta (1789-1845) was a brother-in-arms of Simon
Bolívar, who appointed him Secretary of War in 1828. After
Bolívar's death, he attempted to preserve the unity of Great
Colombia, to no avail, and was forced to exile. After his return
to Venezuela, President Soublette sent him as his envoy
extraordinary to Europe in order to obtain the recognition of the
new state of Venezuela. Urdaneta died in Paris, on his way to
Madrid.

The flag of Urdaneta, as designed by Señorita Marilin
Falcón, is horizontally divided white-green with a green
triangle placed along the hoist and charged with four yellow
stars, three of them being placed vertically along the hoist and
the fourth one being placed near the inner angle of the triangle.
The proportion of the flag is 5:8, the triangle extends over 40%
of the flag length.
