Nuevo Espacio (New Space) is a social-democrat political party founded in 1994, that is a member of the Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría party coalition. The Uruguayan presidential elections of October 2004, were won by this coalition, whose candidate, the socialist doctor Tabaré Vázquez became the first non-traditional parties member elected as president in Uruguay.

The principal leader of Nuevo Espacio is Senator Rafael Michelini, the son of Zelmar Michelini who was a former member of a center-left group inside the traditional Partido Colorado called Movimiento por el Gobierno del Pueblo - MGP (Movement for the People's Government). This group quit the Partido Colorado and was one of the founders of the Frente Amplio in 1971. Zelmar Michelini went to Buenos Aires, Argentina after the 1973 coup of state in Uruguay, where he stayed and lived. Later in 1976 he was detained and killed there.

The party Nuevo Espacio presented its own ballot as an independent political party during its first years. But in 2002, Nuevo Espacio joined the coalition Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio to form a wider coalition named Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría.

Nuevo Espacio is a member of the international group Socialist International alongside the Socialist Party of Uruguay and a lot of socialist and social-democrat political parties from around the world.

Nuevo Espacio flags are blue with the logo of the party: their own version of a "socialist rose". These roses are a symbol of Socialism widely used in a lot of socialist and social-democrat parties around the world. The name of the party appear below the rose.
