Norwich adopted its flag on May 7, 2024. Out of eight finalist designs (88
proposals in total), the one by Zachary Smith was chosen as the winning design.
It should be noted, however, that the adoption on April 17 was postponed because
the original winning design had copyright issues; as such, the flag with the
second highest amount of votes was the winner. The idea of a flag came about
early in 2023, when city historian Agnes Eaton helped to initiate the contest.
Regarding the design, according to the City of Norwich when polling people
for the flag contest: "With three simple colors, it describes the geography and
the beauty of the Norwich area. Nestled in the Chenango River Valley, one can
see the rolling hills of the valley tops alongside the flowing river. The sun
rising behind the valley represents the city of Norwich’s ever improving state,
along with a bright future that beholds the city. The rays represent the
wide-reaching influence over many other local towns and serve to occupy any
unused space that would bore the overall design."
