The seal shows the outline of the state of Illinois with a star pointing to the location of Coal City within the state. Along with that, two connected uppercase Cs make up an abbreviation for the village. Behind the outline is a crossed pick and shovel, which are the tools generally used for coal mining, which is where the village gets its name.
