Pine Island is an unincorporated island community and census-designated place located in Hernando County.

New Pine Island flag unveiled
December 23, 2015

The new Pine Island flag was unveiled at the Pine Island Planning Committee meeting Dec. 9. Cesar Sanchez, originator of the Pine Island flag contest, had an example of the flag made.

“I ordered this flag a week ago and requested overnight delivery,” Sanchez said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t get here on time and I will probably have it tomorrow. As you know, Mel Meo’s artwork won the contest. Her flag was one of 17 entries that the people of Pine Island had to judge from that were on display at the Pine Island Eagle.”

The basic idea for this flag contest entry was to start with the Florida flag. The Florida flag consists of a red crossbar on a white background with the state seal superimposed in the center. The Florida flag goes back more than 100 years.

“We named it ‘7,000 years of fishing Pine Island Florida,'” Meo said. “The mural begins at the top with the Calusa Indians and finishes at the bottom with the local fishermen of today.”

“I’m an island girl and have a passion for Pine island since I moved here in 1970,” Meo said. “I decided to change the red ‘X’ of the Florida flag to blue to represent the water that surrounds Pine Island. Our past history and our future are tied together. I started with the Calusa Indian, then added the mangroves, a pine tree and, of course, the American eagle. There is a fish shack, some mangoes and even a mullet. The underlying message is ‘Community Rooted in Caring’ because that’s who Pine Islanders are.”

Meo’s painting is eclectic and exuberant, bursting forth through an astounding variety of colors and always exhibiting the artist’s spirituality and sense of humor. Her shop is full of watercolors, painted furniture, silk screened clothing, and much more. Her art, and the Pine Island flag, is all at once whimsical, cheerful, and tropically colorful.
