I’m not sure if this is a usual practice, but at least one portuguese club,
the quite known Sport Algés e Dafundo, has the following practice:
Afloat (all classes of operated vessles, from small lasers to ocean crossing
sailships) the triangular burgee is used, but on land
a rectangular flag in the same pattern is used, both
in events and locations related to non-sailing sports (especially handball,
gymnastics and swimming) but also in events and locations related to sailing
sports.

This flag shows a Christ’s Knights Order cross on a
green cross throughout (quite similar to some Portuguese
Navy rank flags).

The same ppatern is used on the burgee, adapted to it’s
form by use of an overall cross — a look so many yacht club burgees display.
