Shield Argent a bird (toy made of wood) Gules with wings Azure semi of bezants and a wheel Azure semi of plates, on either chief corner a grape bunch Purpure leafed Vert (village rank) and short white scroll, in Bénard Guedes style, reading in black upper case serifed letters "LANHAS".
Meaning:
At the history page of the official communal website, a Folk Crafts House (Casa de Artesanato) is briefly mentioned, adding that there "small wooden objects" are made, apparently to be sold elsewhere, namely in Madeira (the word for "wood" and this island´s name being the same makes for a weird sentence in the original), Lisbon, "and even abroad". No further info is to be found in the official communal website
Turns out that this is, more than a widespread ancient local tradition,
based on a single woodshop´s output. The models produced there are of well-known designs, such as woodturning spinning tops, or the wheeled walking-pole wing-fluttering bird automaton, shown in the coat of arms. It is charming and it seems that local consensus (among 600-something communal citizens) was met to put this one business on the coat of arms.
