Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent Azure and Vert, a belfry's top Argent masoned Sable with bell Or, flanked by two eradicated vine plants Argent fruited Or, Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "A DOS CUNHADOS".
Meaning:
The clocktower in the arms refers to a local landmark, as to be seen here, and the green and blue water stand for the commune's seashore (green) and River Alcabrichel (blue).
Before the adoption of these arms, an earlier design was in use, also on a plain white flag. It featured a blue shield, quartered to show four tokens of the local interests, a golden mural crown with four visible towers (town rank) and a golden scroll reading "VILA DE A-DOS-CUNHADOS". By means of extensive modifications, this coat of arms originated the current one. (see this image
This is one of several Portuguese toponyms made from an elliptical reference to notable denizens (often lost in the mists of time). The phrase "a dos" means "the one of the" and could be expanded as "a terra dos" ("the village/town of the"). Here, A dos Cunhados, also styled A-dos-Cunhados, is the Town of Brothers-in-Law ("_cunhado_", litt. "wedged", cp. "coined").
