The coat of arms is vert issuant from coupeaux proper a castle argent masoned sable charged with an inescutcheon with Portugal ancient and with an eagle displayed or on its middle tower and a mullet or in honour point. Mural crown argent with four visible towers town rank and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "TRANCOSO". On this image different colours (white and brown, instead of green and black), are given for the cliffs.

As far as I can guess, these arms refer to local history, heritage and landscape features.

Coat of arms and flag approved by law and published in the official journal _Diário da República, III Série_ of 1987.08.20 (I don't know why such a later date: almost all Portuguese municipalities were granted arms in the 1930'ies).

Trancoso municipality had 10 639 inhabitants in 2000, and it is divided in 29 communes, covering 361,5 km². It belongs to the Guarda District, to the traditional province Beira Alta, to the would be administrative region Beira Interior, and to the current NUT2/CCR region Centro.
