It is a slightly atypical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a purple and green quartered background (town rank). The flag background is against the metal plus colour regulation prescribed by law, though not an unique situation concerning purple.

The arms are Argent between two bunches of grapes fruited Purpure and leafed Vert six ears of wheat Or tied of the same. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters"VILA DE SÁTÃO".

Sátão municipality had 13 144 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 9 communess covering 198,40 km². It is part of Viseu District, traditional province Beira Alta, 1999 ref. adm. region Beira Litoral, C.C.R. / NUTS II Centro, and NUTS III Dão-Lafões.
