It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

The arms are Argent, over base wavy Argent and Azure a mound Vert issuant from base wavy Argent, flanked by an ancient sword and a scimitar (falcata) both Gules set in pale and pointing upwards, in chief a tower Azure masoned Argent with port and windows Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "FREGUESIA DE MONDIM DE BASTO".

São Cristovão de Mondim de Basto Commune, or simply Mondim de Basto, is one of the six communes of the eponymous municipality; it had 3273 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 23.4 km².
