It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Coat of Arms

Shield Or with base wavy of Azure and Argent, on fess point an embattled tower Gules masoned Sable with port and windows Azure, on chief a corn cob Gules leafed Vert between two grape bunches Purpure leafed Vert. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers(village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VILAR DE TORNO E ALENTÉM".
Meaning:
The base wavy is a representation of the Sousa River. The tower is a representation of the local so called "Tower of the Moors". Grape bunch and corn cob are symbolising viticulture and agriculture.
The commune of Santa Maria de Vilar do Torno belonged to the district of Felgueiras, precisely to the de Santa Cruz de Riba Tâmega Municipality, which was created bon 1 September 1513 by an approval, granted by Dom Manuel I. It became extinct in 1855 and its biggest part was incorporated into Amarante Municipality. The commune was not created by the 2013 mergers. Instead it incorporated the former Alentém Commune already in 1834.

Vilar do Torno e Alentém is one of the nine communes of Lousada Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 1295 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 4,57 km².
