Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "COVAS - LOUSADA".
Meaning:
Grapes and corn cob are symbolising agriculture. Chalice and serpent are alluding to St. John the Evangelist, the local patron saint. The symbols appear in the following legend:
The Evangelist was forced by Aristodemus, the chief priest of the famous Artemis Temple of Ephesus, to sacrifice to that Pagan Goddess, which he refused. He afterwards was forced to drink from a poisoned chalice of wine. The saint made the sign of the cross and the poison went out from the chalice as a serpent. The priest then converted and became a Christian.
