It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on green and white gyronny (city rank)(city rank) background.

The arms are Gules issuant from a campaign of soil proper emphasized Vert and Sable (!) a castle Argent with port and windows Gules on the field between two trees Vert fruited Or and in chief an inescutcheon Argent a cross Azure the inescutcheon between a crescent pointing to sinister in dexter and a 5-point star Argent of the same. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE LAMEGO". Lamego is one of the 40 "ancient" (pre-1973) Portuguese cities.

Lamego municipality had 28 081 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 18 communescommunes covering 166,71 km². It is part of Viseu District, traditional province and 1999 ref. adm. region Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Douro.
