Shield Or with base wavy of Vert and Argent, a hooded cape (Port.: capote) Sable, in chief a pair of scales Azure at dexter and an open book Argent bound Gules at sinister. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "HORTA - MATRIZ".
Meaning:
The cape is a typical traditional piece of clothing in Horta. The book is referring to cultural activities and institutions in the commune. The scales are alluding to commerce, the main local business line. The base wavy with its green waves is representing the Atlantic.

Matriz Commune is one of the 13 communes of Horta Municipality and one of the urban communes (boroughs) of Horta city; it had 2562 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 1.6 km².
