Shield Purple on a mound of three coupeaux Argent an estoile Azure and on chief a flail Or in bend. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "MANGUALDE DA SERRA".
Meaning:
Even though the main charge given in the blazon is the mound, with the flail in chief, graphical representations of this coat of arms show the latter as the main element, or at least as proeminently as the mound — and maybe unavoidably so, as it is prescribed to be placed in bend.
The word "mangualde" is superficially meaningless but a clear cognate of "mangualde", which means "flail" or "threshel" and is shown in the coat of arms. The nearby and upper level Mangualde Municipality shares the same etymology; the additional epithet "da serra" (= "of the range") disambiguates from this better known toponym and it too is shown on the coat of arms, and doubtly so: The mound and its coupeaux are generically denotative of a mountain range, while the star iconically refers to this particular mountain range, Serra da Estrela (= Star Range, lit. Mountain Range of the Star). Therefore this coat of arms is fully canting, as all of its elements refer to every element of the toponym.
