Shield Argent, issuant from a base wavy of Argent and Azure a mount Vert, on fess point a dolmen Sable, on central chief point a scent bottle Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VILARINHO DA CASTANHEIRA".
Meaning:
The scent bottle is an attribute of St. Mary Magdalen, the local patron saint. The dolmen is symbolising the early peopling of the village. The other charges are alluding to the local landscape.
The word "castanheira" is the female form of "castanheiro", which means "chestnut tree"; this grammatical gender variation in Portuguese tree names usually refers to an exceptionally large individual tree. The compound meaning of this toponym, "hamlet of the large chestnut tree", is not refered to in the arms, which are therefore not canting.
