Presentation of Alturas do Barroso e Cerdedo

Alturas do Barroso e Cerdedo is one of the five communes of Boticas Municipality created by a merger during the 2013 changes. It had 389 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 56,25 km².
The heights of Barroso are one of the last undiscovered nooks of Portugal — towering over the meadow of Chaves, a land of witchcraft conventions, failed meter-gauge railways, medieval cross-border extraterritoriality, pharaonic hydro damms, easy-listening festivals, and toxic abandoned mines set to reopen.

Meaning:
The perfume cup is an attribute of St. Mary Magdalen, the local patron saint. As the mount can be said to stand for heights, these arms are partially canting for part of the toponym.

Alturas do Barroso e Cerdedo was one of the 11 communes of Boticas Municipality affected by the 2013 changes. It had 399 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 32,77 km².
This toponym means "heights of Barroso", the latter toponym, as said, being a common appelation for this commune and the neighbouring Montalegre commune, which take up most of a mountainous landform named Serra do Barroso (literally: muddy range).
