It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Shield Or a fess Sable masoned Argent (it is blazoned as a wall section, but lacks the usual embattlements) and in chief issuant from a cup Gules a serpent Vert eyed and langued Gules and in base a hazel eradicated Vert fruited Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CASTRO DE AVELÃS".
Meaning:
"Castro de Avelãs" means something like "Fort Hazel"" (literally "castle of hazelnuts"): both concepts are shown in the arms, thus partly canting.

Castro de Avelãs Commune is one of the 39 communes of Bragança Municipality; it had 460 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 13.5 km².
