It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure, with base wavy of Argent and Azure, a bezant charged with an eagle Sable lined Argent, in chief three Greek crosslets Argent set in fess (though blazon says Latin crosses). Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank)and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "AREIAS DE VILAR".

Areias de Vilar Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Barcelos Municipality; it had 1365 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 5.8 km².

Shield Or, in chief a scallop Gules, in base two cow furs of Argent and Sable (in Germany called "schwarzbunt" / or with black furs). Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank)and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "ENCOURADOS".
