About the Flag

Coat of arms

Shield Vert, a windmill's wheel Sable rigged Argent between two rounded crosses patty Gules ordered per fess in chief and a branch of vine Or connected in base and surrounding a lunel Argent with an 8-point-star Gules in its centre. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "VENTOSA - ALENQUER".
Meaning:
The crosses are alluding to the Order of the Templars, former rulers of the lands across Ventosa, who cultivated the area by clearing the landsape and introduced viticulture, which is also symbolozed by the branches. Windmills were important in the past in order to produce flour. Lunel and star are taken from the arms of Sebastião José de Carvalho, Viscount of Chanceleiros, who revolutionised the local viticulture completely, especially by protecting the grapes from vine fretters.
