Meaning:
As often happens, these symbols are partly taken from each of the two ancestor communes´ coats of arms. The arms are basically those of former Pópulo Commune with flax blossoms added from the arms of former Ribalonga.

Pópulo e Ribalonga is one of the four communes of Alijó Municipality created by a merger during the 2013 changes. It had 409 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 21.3 km².

Meaning:
The Portuguese word "pópulo" is an recent erudite borrowing from Latin "populus" meaning "poplar", a tree (the regular Portuguese word for it is "choupo", from the same Latin etym but with several centuries worth of wear and tear). Since the tree shown on the arms is rather a chestnut tree, these are not canting.
