It might be worth mentioning that the Sultan has two "capital cities", Musqat and Salalah, although Musqat is the only official capital city of the Sultanate.
After having overthrown his father in 1970, Sultan Qabus decided to modernize the country and to solve the national conflicts through negotiation rather than bombing. His father preferred to ask the British Resident to send RAF aircraft to get rid of the rebels. Ironically, Qabus was educated in Sandhurst Academy and advised by British officers to overthrow his father.
The province of Dhofar, in the south-west of the country, near Yemen, was incorporated to Oman in 1879. Successive rebellions turned into an organized guerilla in the 1970s, with the creation in South Yemen of the
Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arab Gulf. In December 1975, an agreement was found with the rebels, and the Sultan decided he would spend the six winter months in Salalah, the capital city of Dhofar, and the six summer months in Musqat.
I was in Musqat in Summer 1998, and I saw the Sultan's flag hoisted over his palace.
