All that is known is that the coat of arms was modernized in 2015 by Raúl Ruiz Art. It was adopted before 1987, when the first edition of the Municipal Encyclopedia for the state was published.
Below the shield is a large bundle of leaves, with a ribbon in the national colors enveloping all throughout. A plaque reads "Pedro Mendez, S.J. Fundador"
referencing the founder of the town from the Society of Jesus. The shield is bordered in red, reading "EN SUS HOMBRES FINCA LA ESPERANZA" [In its men it lies its hope],
and at the top has a red ribbon reading "1641 SAHUARIPA 1911", the founding of the Our Lady of the Angels of Sahuaripa mission and the start of the Revolution in Sonora.
An oval at the top of the central ribbon depicts three yellow ants, the origin of the municipal name. The inner area of the shield is divided into three, with a door-shaped quadrant
at the bottom.
The door-shaped quadrant depicts the Our Lady of Guadalupe church with a path leading to it and trees beside it (the mountains and sky in the background), with the
year 1627 imposed on a plaque (founding of the Saint Mary of the Angels mission). The right triangle depicts clouds in a sky with mountains dominating the scene; a minecart
filled with ore can be seen on a track. It is found within a circle that also reads "OSTHIMURI", the old Spanish name for the province it was located in. Below is a
pickaxe and shovel; the entire scene is clearly representative of mining. The left triangle depicts various items from the land: onion, watermelon, and corn. There is also cattle
with a glow around its head, the desert and sky in the background. The upper triangle depicts the chief Sisibutari standing on a mound, who lived in the area, with the sun emanating
and two birds on an orange background.
