I was informed by the council nothing is known about the background of the municipal coat of arms. At the top is a ribbon reading "1612 OTAEZ 1917", the foundation and municipal establishment years respectively. At the bottom are two plants crossed and tied together by a ribbon. At the top of the border of the shield, there is a man, arrow, cross, bundle of arrows, and Indian, representing the struggles of the colonial era. As for the inner section: At the top, there is an image of a river through a canyon, typical of the regional scenery. To the lower-left, there is a cactus, and fruits of the region: apple, peach, pears, corn, potatoes, and corn, remembering the agricultural economy. To the lower-right, three cattle are seen, along with a hard hat, crossed pick and shovel, and bundle of logs; these represent the cattle-raising industry, mining, and exploitation of forest resources.
