In 1972, for the 45th anniversary of the municipality and at the request of Municipal President Manuel Jáquez Olivas, a contest was launched for the design of a municipal coat of arms. The painter Leonel Esparza Murguía was chosen as the winner. Under the tenure of Jorge Castillo Cabrera in 1987, the symbol was adopted as official. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:

The Shield has the form of a scrolled poster, its field is oval to the style of a ecclesiastic medallion, its lateral metals (colors) are gold (yellow). The field is divided in two sections, the upper or chief and the lower or base, hence it has been parted producing two sections [sic], in the upper section over an open book are inscribed two years: 1922 year in which the Mennonites arrived to the region and 1927 year in which by decree it was elevated to the degree of Municipality, two hands greeting fraternally represent the mestizo culture and the anglo-saxon (mennonites) that work for the progress of the Municipality. The lower section composes as blazons a Mine which represents Mining, whose antecedent is in the Municipality of Cusihuiriachi, a chimney represents the industry of cellulose, the cattle-raising is represented by a head of bovine, agriculture by a bundle of oatmeal, its forestal wealth is represented by stacked trunks of pine trees and a great pine tree, two apples one red and the other yellow represent fruticulture, the shield is crested by a ribbon which carries the name of the Municipality, as a complement of this shield it carries in the lower part a ribbon with the motto: Trabajo, Progreso, Amistad [Work, Progress, Friendship]; two branches of an oak tree surround the field.

Note: More modern versions do not have the years on the book.

In its border, the motto AMISTAD TRABAJO PROGRESO is read [Friendship, Work, Progress]. At the bottom, a ribbon in yellow reading ANAHUAC is read. As for the inner section: Two branches surround the central scene, with an apple in place of their intersection. Going from top to bottom, there are two clouds, the sun shining, a hill, and lagoon [Laguna de los Bustillos] are part of the local scenery. A cob of corn in its husk for agriculture, with a church for faith, and factory for industry, and two hands handshaking for collaboration. Below is an image of the fields.
