Sir Gaëtan Duval (1930-1996) was the leader of
the Mauritian Social Democrat Party (in French,
Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate, PMSD), founded in 1953 and once
partisan of the integration of Mauritius to the United
Kingdom. Gaëtan Duval’s succession was not easy and the
party split into the PMSD, led by Maurice Allet and keeping the
original party’s emblem, the rooster, and the PMXD,
founded by Sir Gaëtan’s son Xavier Duval and using the
horse as its emblem. Attempts to reconciliate the two factions have failed
since then and the PMSD is still in the opposition.
