Description

Description of flag:
It is a white flag divided by a red centred cross with a yellow-edged blue disc in its centre, containing a white 5-point star.
Note:
This flag is doubtful because I haven’t seen it. It is based on a description of an employee of Malta Heritage, who told me that the flag would have the same pattern as the “new” coat of arms. Looking at the image already displayed [at the top of this page], I found out that it couldn’t be the same pattern, because in the coat of arms there is a Latin cross, not a Greek one. Furthermore the official website of Il-Mosta still uses the coat of arm with a yellow disc containing a blue star. In Il-Mosta itself there were used both versions side by side and it seemed to be so that the blue disc version was the newer one.

This is the current flag based on the coat of arms included in this website: http://lc.gov.mt/Page.aspx?catid=23&pid=184

Previous flag

I spotted the city flag of Il-Mosta in November 2000. It was its banner-of-arms —proportions 3:5, as near as I can tell—, a red St. George on white field —like England, but the width of the arms of the cross looked bigger to me— at the center of the cross a blue star on a gold circle.

According to the Local Council website:

Similar to the greatest majority of towns and villages world wide, Il-Mosta too boasts of its own coat of arms. Such a symbol reflects Il-Mosta’s beliefs and assets which are projected in the various component parts of its coat of arms. The silver shield has a red cross in whose centre there is a golden circle within which is placed a sky-blue five-pointed star.

The red cross symbolises the Catholic faith which has always predominated the lives and beliefs of the locals. The circle represents the Rotunda, Il-Mosta’s parish church, its main landmark and the building for which it is most famous with one and all, Maltese and foreigner alike. The blue star is the symbol of the Madonna, Our Lady, patron saint of the town, whose feast is celebrated on the 15th of August.

This is the old flag that was amended about five years ago [ca. 2007].

Ceremonial flag

[Malta Socialist Party] image located by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 29 May 2006

I took this photo in August 1995 at a fiesta in Mostar/Malta. It shows the coat of arms of Mosta surrounded by a wreath of laurel, placed upon red-white, the national colours of Malta, and having a blue rim with some golden stars on it. I guess this is not the municipal flag, but a flag hoisted by the people of Mosta to honour St. Mary. The stars probably are her attributes.
