In 1589, he succeeded to the governorship and became the lord of Nakatsu Castle in Buzen Province with 120,000 goku. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he was a member of the Eastern force, and was awarded 520,000 goku of land in Chikuzen Province after the war, largely for his success in luring Kobayakawa Hideaki and Yoshikawa Hiroya to his side. The war banner has dark blue background with Kuroda’s Kamon Family emblem of wisteria flower in white. According to a legend, the wisteria flower was chosen as the family emblem because it was a wisteria flower seen from the prison that comforted Nagamasa's father when he was imprisoned in a dungeon for a year by Araki Murashige, who rebelled against Oda Nobunaga in 1576. Another war banner was black background divided into three equal parts, with white horizontal stripe in the middle topped with the same design Maneki.
