Overview

I first became aware of this flag at a rally on February 27, 2010. In late 2009, the Green Federation (Federazione dei Verdi) at first, then also the Italian Socialist Party (Partito Socialista Italiano), stepped out of the coalition called Sinistra e Libertà. The three members left were joined by the Associazione Ecologisti (Ecologists Association), and the coalition turned into a movement, adding 'Ecology' to its name. Although the word 'and' is not featured in the logo, the party is commonly known all the same as 'Left Ecology and Liberty'.

The flag is an evolution of the previous pattern: the logo is round, centrally positioned on a red background, and has the same size as before, although it now has a black outline. The upper part (about 3/5 of the whole logo) is white, and the remaining lower part is red; the division line between the two parts is no longer straight but curved, forming an upper convexity. The three words that form the name of the movement are spelt over the upper part in red, green and black letters, respectively; the first two words are in lowercase Helvetica font, the last one in uppercase freehand script and features a red accent over the last letter. In the lower part of the logo are the words 'con Vendola' (with Vendola) in white lowercase Helvetica font, referring to the leader of the movement, Nichi Vendola (his name is spelt in larger letters than 'con').
Left Ecology and Liberty will take part in the forthcoming regional elections, scheduled on March 28-29, 2010.

SEL (Sinistra Ecologia e Libertà = Left Ecology Freedom)

The SEL was founded in 2009/2010 as a continuation of the earlier Sinistra e Libertà alliance. However, several of the original alliance members (mainly the FdV and the PSI) did not take part. So it was a merger of Sinistra Democratica (SD), Movimento per la Sinistra (MpS), Unire la Sinistra (UlS) and Associazione Ecologisti (AE). SEL is led by Nichi Vendola (formerly MpS), president of Apulia. For the February 2013 elections it was part of the center-left alliance. It holds 36 seats in the Camera dei Deputati and 7 seats in the Senato.
The party symbol is white over red; in the white field the inscription "sinistra" (red), ecologia (green), libertà (black). The electoral symbol adds the white inscription "con Vendola" in the red field. The mainly used flag is red and shows the electoral symbol [1,2,3,4].
