Overview

Gávavencsellő is a large village in Ibrány district of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary. The village was established in 1971 by merging the former separate villages of Gáva and Vencsellő.
Gáva:
This region was inhabited even before the conquest of Hungary. It seems likely that this region was inhabited by the Dacians before the conquest, because the area of today's village fell on the western border of ancient Dacia.
Gáva is one of the oldest settlements in the county, and was probably the estate of the Szabolcs County Governorship founded by Stephen I.
Written records of the village of Gáva date back to 1304, the origin of its name is doubtful: it refers to the words Gawa, Gauga, Dana, which naturally means Guard Hill. After the Tatar invasion, the Szabolcs Castle Governorship ceased to exist. All parts of it have survived, and in 1380 a family named Gávai already owned it.
Vencsellő:
Its first settlers were the Avar tribes, the ancient Besenyő people. Before 1326, the village belonged to the Gut-Keled clan, and in 1373 it came into the hands of the Báthory family. In 1598, the Báthory family, together with Tímár, sold the village to Mihály Bessenyei.
In the 17th century, the Rákóczi family owned it. During the Rákóczi War of Independence, the village was almost depopulated.
It was only in the early 1730s that it began to be repopulated. According to the urbarium recorded in 1772, the settlers were mostly Hungarians. At the end of the 17th century, the village was bought by the Dessewffy family, and they settled the Germans in 1785, who became Magyarized within 2-3 generations.

The coat of arms is a red shield divided in two by a horizontal silver band, symbolizing the Tisza River flowing through the town. The golden arrow in the upper part is the symbol of Vencsellő (Vencel + shoot), the golden seven-petaled flower in the lower part comes from the Gáva seal from 1777. The shield is surrounded by a golden floral ornament, and decorated with a five-pointed crown.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Local Government Decree.
