Overview

Földes is a large village in Püspökladány district of Hajdú-Bihar County, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary.
The first written mention of Földes is found in the Várad regestrum in 1215. After that, Földes' name does not appear in written sources until 1342, and it is not found in the papal tithe register, but an interesting tradition survives in the village. In 1241–42, they escaped the destruction of the Tatars by surrounding the village with animal manure, then setting it on fire, and the Tatars avoided the settlement due to the smoke.
János Hunyadi grants a coat of arms to several members of the Földes family in 1449. The Földes landowner family alternately uses the names Földesi and Szentmiklósi, depending on the location of their estates.
Between 1552 and 1570, during the castle wars and campaigns launched by the Turks, the village becomes a conquered territory, its fate is completely uncertain, it is constantly threatened by Turkish-Tatar invasions and destruction.
Földes, together with Szabolcs County, was a buffer zone between Royal Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania, and the Turkish Empire. After the Peace of Nikolsburg (1621), the village belonged to Transylvania.
After the Turkish period, a series of lawsuits lasting more than 50 years followed between the village and the nobles and Szabolcs County.
In 1876, it was annexed to the newly established Hajdú County, thus ending the 800-year relationship of Szabolcs County with it.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms is a blue shield, on which a lamb facing right stands with its right leg raised on a green field, with a six-pointed star above it.
The lamb itself is a very old Christian symbol (the lamb of God), and occurs on several coats of arms. It is quite certain that it dates back to before the Reformation.
The interesting thing about the coat of arms of Földes is that the lamb - a symbol of Jesus Christ - raises its right leg because it originally held an Easter banner with it, and there may have been a golden disk around its head symbolizing the holiness. The latter were apparently left out of the coat of arms of the village as a result of the adoption of the Reformation, when the village converted to the Reformed faith in the second half of the 16th century.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Local Government Decree.
