Overview

Helvécia is a large village in Kecskemét district of Bács-Kiskun county, in the Southern Great Plain region of southern Hungary.
Before the conquest, Sarmatians lived here. Based on nearby excavations, this may have been the center of the Avar empire. The settlements that previously stood in the area were destroyed during the Turkish rule and the region remained uninhabited for a long time.
The settlement was founded in March 1892 thanks to Ede Wéber, a Swiss teacher, and was named Helvecia in his will (Helvetia is the Latin name for Switzerland). There are 187 settlements named Helvecia (Helvetia) in the world.
Helvécia became an independent municipality in 1952, becoming independent from Kecskemét.
