Presentation of Šibenik-Knin County

Šibenik-Knin County, located in north of Dalmatia, was occupied by Serbia in 1991. Most parts of the county were until 1997 included in the Zadar-Knin County (now Zadar County), due to the fact that the whole occupied area was considered as a single District (kotar) of Knin. In 1997 more natural borders of the counties were made.

Flag of Šibenik-Knin County

The symbols of Šibenik-Knin County are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Šibensko-kninske županije, adopted on 9 July 1999 by the County Assembly and published on 23 July 1999 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, No. 7.
The Decision amends the previous Decision in regard to the description of the coat of arms, only to change the direction into which the sword is pointing - now towards the chief. The graphic representation, however, (printed on the front page of the gazette and a large image covering a full page inside) is slightly different from the previous one, also. The Decision says nothing about the flag, so presumably it would remain the same only with the new coat of arms in the middle. The same goes for the ceremonial flag.
The approval of the symbols by the Ministry is dated 18 May 1999.
The new County Statutes Statut Šibensko-kninske županije, adopted on 28 September 2001 by the County Asembly and published on 16 October 2001 in Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, No. 11, include the description of the coat of arms, of the flag and of the ceremonial flag.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, light blue with two thin stripes along the top and bottom edges and the golden outlined coat of arms in the middle. Blue stands for the sea and the stripes for river Krka.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.

The coat of arms is: "Gules a crown or superimposed over a sword erect argent hilted and pommed of the second."
Red stands for the traditional red headgear of Šibenik and DrniŠ region, the ethnographic symbol that occurred in the 19th century during the National Revival movement in Dalmatia, the crown is of the type used by the Croatian national rulers in the time of Krešimir and Zvonimir.
The crown of Zvonimir is based on the representation of the crown on the head of a Croatian king found on the old Croatian engraving in a baptistery built in early Romanesque 11th century style. The baptistery is found in Split, and it is believed that the figure represents King Zvonimir-Dmitar (?-1089, ruled from 1075), who liberated Dalmatia from Venetians, and organized the capital and the seat of the Croatian Parliament in Knin. The same crown design is used on the coat of arms of the Split-Dalmatia County.

A TV report from the County Assembly session few days ago showed on the chairman's desk a table flag of the County in vertical format and in banner form, just like a ceremonial flag.

Zakljucak o grbu i zastavi Županije Šibenske, dated 11 December 1996 and published on 20 December 1996 in Službeni vjesnik Županije Šibenske, No. 13, presents the results of the contest. The symbolic of the colors is described as: red for the traditional red headgear of Šibenik and DrniŠ region, the ethnographic symbol that occurred in the 19th century during the National Revival movement in Dalmatia, the crown is of the type used by the Croatian national rulers in the time of Krešimir and Zvonimir. The flag is with proportions 1:2, blue with two thin stripes along the top and bottom edge with the coat of arms in the middle. Blue stands for the sea and the stripes for river Krka.
The symbols were eventually adopted by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Šibensko-kninske županije, adopted on 22 December 1997 by the County Assembly and published on 29 December 1997 in Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, No. 17.

Right, flag validated in 1997

The selected ceremonial flag is a blue vertical flag with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle. Above the coat of arms is written "ŽUPANIJA ŠIBENSKA" and below the coat of arms are set three details from the Šibenik-Drniš headgear (black spiral curves) that reaches within the three flag tails at the bottom.
Due to the territorial changes made in the beginning of 1997, the reformed County formally adopted the previously selected design with appropriately amended inscription.
