Ston is an old outpost of Dubrovnik at the mouth of the Pelješac (Sabbioncello / Punta Stagni / Stonski rat) peninsula, mostly known for the production of salt and, in the newer times, for the production of shells. The municipality consists of 18 settlements, with 2,605 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, the village of Ston counting 528 inhabitants.
The strategic importance of the town made Dubrovnik to build in the 14th century a large net of fortification walls that are still standing for the most part and are, or so they say, the largest fortification system after the Great Wall of China, measuring 5.5 km.

The symbols of Ston are prescribed in Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Ston, dopted on 3 November 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 2 December 1994 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Županije Dubrovačko - Neretvanske, No. 3.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Ston, adopted on 6 November 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 December 2001 in Službeni glasnik Dubrovačko-neretvanske županije, No. 7.
The flag is described in Article 7 of the Decision:
The flag of the Municipality of Ston is yellow, in the middle of it is the coat of arms of the Municipality and beneath it a capital inscription - STON - and at the base a motif from the Pre-romanic wattlework of 10th century from the St. George church in Janjina and the Lady of Lužina chruch in Ston. The ratio of width to length is 3:5.
The original of the flag is preserved in the Mayor's Office in Ston.
If this flag was ever produced, we may probably regard it as the ceremonial version, since the 2001 Statutes describes a "simple" flag, no new legal act having been issued in the mean time:
The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms is described in Article 4 of the Decision:
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Ston is shaped in Gothic form, on a blue background. In its middle there is a stylized representation of the forts of Stoviš and Koruna, in the base the salterns and at the top the figure of St. Blasius, in golden-yellow colour, holding in one hand a Gothic pastoral staff and blessing with his other hand.

The ceremonial flag of the municipality of Ston, the work of Željko Heimer,
is displayed here.
The ceremonial flag is a vertical yellow flag in the scale
3:5 with a coat of arms above the inscription STON and ornaments with
pre-Romanesque wattle motifs from the 10th century from the Church of St. Jurja
in Janjina and the Church of Our Lady of Lužina in Ston. So far, only this
ceremonial flag has been recorded in use.
