SDP was established on 3 November 1990 in Zagreb as the legal sucessor of the League of Communists of Croatia (SKH, Savez komunista Hrvatske), renamed in 1989 SKH-SDP (Savez komunista Hrvatske - Stranka demokratskih promjena) for the first multiparty organizations. Soon the name was changed to the current one; on 30 April 1994 SDP merged with SDH (Social demokrati Hrvastske). Ivica Račan, the party's leader since the 1980s was the Prime Minister of the 2000-2004 coalition governemnt.

The today's flags of SDP were adopted on 8 May 2004 during the party's convention and prescribed in Statutarna odluka o znaku (Statutory Decision on emblems, to be approved during the next party's convention as part of the new statutes). The new symbols have been in legal use since 1 January 2005.
The flag is described quite tersely, as a flag with proportions 1:2, white
with the party's emblem in it. However, the flags hoisted on
the party's headquarters in Zagreb, Ibler Square, are a bit more complex. The flag is white with the party's emblem duplicated to form a checky field in the fly half of the flag, while the hoist half includes the full
name of the party written in black letters along the top edge.
The flag is using an interesting solution to the double-side issue: the reverse side is turned upside down, so that the writing is
running along the lower edge - providing absolutely readable
design when the flag is hoisted vertically, but also not quite bad
when the flag is hoisted slanted at 45 degrees, which is the usual way
of hoisting flags on buildings over here.

Since the multiparty election, SDP dropped the Communist symbols and began using a white flag with large black letters "SDP" (in Times font) and three red, blue and green squares. Typically, the flags were also inscribed below the emblem with the full name of the party, as determined in the party's statutes.

The flag of SDH is the Croatian tricolor flag with the party's emblem in the middle. The emblem consisits of the letters "SDH" and a red rose. A white flag with the emblem was also occasionally in use. The flag was abandoned in 1994 when the party merged with SDP.
