Instigated in 2001, the Thames Tideway Strategic Study, conducted by a
group comprising Thames Water, the Environment
Agency, DEFRA and the Greater London
Authority, was intended to assess the impact of the CSO discharges into the
Thames and to identify objectives and propose potential solutions. Tideway's
Super Sewer is upgrading London's infrastructure to cope with demands well
into the 22nd century and reconnecting the city with the iconic River
Thames. The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25 kilometre interception, storage
and transfer tunnel running up to 65 m below the river.
Tideway is
the company delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel. It is owned by a
consortium of investors, namely Allianz, Amber Infrastructure, and Dalmore
Capital. Preparatory work on the project began in 2015 when Bazalgette
Tunnel Ltd., trading as Tideway, began operating as an independent regulated
water company in August and construction at the three main hub sites in 2016
at each of their 24 sites in London. Work is anticipated to be completed by
2024 (other sources mention 2025).
