Coat
of Arms:
Shield Sable, a saltire Ermine between four bladed wheels Or.
Motto on white scroll beneath: “NOVA ET VETERA” (= The New and the Old)
The
college was the successor of St Catherine’s Society and was established as a
college in 1962. It was originally a delegacy of the University and using the
arms of the University with two differences : the words on the book have been
changed to “SAPIENTIA ET FELICITATE” and there was a canton Argent, charged with
a bladed wheel Gules. Formerly another shield was used indiscriminately with the
one mentioned, blazoned as follows: “Shield Gules, a bend Argent, charged with
three bladed wheels Gules”). It is now used only by the Boat Club. Neither of
these coats of arms have been granted. The College is currently using the device
here appended. By legend St. Catherine of Alexandria was condemned to be broken
on the wheel but it shattered at her touch and she was instead beheaded.

The current coat of arms is similar to that one of St. Hugh’s coat of arms,
which displays four fleurs-de-lys instead of the bladed wheels. Source does not
mention, whether it was inspired from the arms of St. Hugh’s or whether the
similarities occurred incidentally.
