Fernand & Charles Brunellière was a shipping company based in Nantes.
They launched in 1889 the three-master Fédération, which was the first French big-sized sailing ship with a steel hull. The
Fédération was lost in 1898 off Madagascar during a hurricane.
In 1902, Brunellière launched two three-masters, Les Adelphes and Henriette (Les grands voiliers cap-hornais nantais website).
Charles Brunellière (1847-1917) is mostly known as a Socialist
politician, one of the founders of the Fédération socialiste de Bretagne in 1900.
The name of the ship Fédération reflects the political views of her owner, who was a pioneer in the organization of worker's unions and cooperatives in Nantes, especially for farmers and seamen.

According to Louis Lacroix (Les Derniers grands voiliers. Histoire des long-courriers nantais de 1893 à 1931), the house flag of Brunellièree is red with a broad blue bend diagonal stripe, per bend sinister, charged with three six-pointed stars tilted to the upper hoist.
The red and blue colors might have been taken from the registration flag used by merchant ships registered in Nantes.
