National Emblem of Ethiopia
Derkwillem
Visser's "Flaggen Wappen Hymnen" (1998) [vis98]
states on page 51: Staatswappen: Eingefürt 1996. Eine
hellblaue runde Scheibe mit einem gelben Pentagram und fünf gelben
Trapezen.
(Coat of arms: introduced 1996. A light blue round disk with a yellow pentagram and five yellow trapezes).
It shows the same emblem that used to be found in the middle of the
1996 flag.
In the new constitution that can be found at several places on Internet
(such as on
ET embassy page)
Article 3 mentions the symbol "only" as the national emblem. However, since the
symbol
does not follow heraldic tradition it may be more appropriate to call it the
national emblem although we
can assume that its usage and function is similar to that of a coat of arms.

I agree. I think this is purely terminological problem, possibly it would be more
appropriate to talk about *national emblems*, some of them having
traditionally the *form* of coat-of arms.
All my sources agree that
the blue disk with the pentagram can be considered as the coat of arms of
Ethiopia.
