The flag and arms (municipal website) of Bernuy de Porreros are prescribed by a Decree
adopted on 11 February 1997 by the Segovia Provincial Government,
signed on 21 February 1997 by the President of the Government, and
published on 3 March 1997 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 42 (text).
The symbols are described
as follows:
Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, quartered white and blue. In the middle is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Spanish shield rounded-off in base. Per pale, 1. Or a lion gules holding a sledgehammer [argent] ensigned with a Cross of Saint James gules over waves azure and argent, 2. Gules the Segovia aqueduct argent masoned gules over ten stones argent [Crown not mentioned].
The dexter part of the arms represents Bernuy de Porreros. The lion
symbolizes the courage of the villagers; the quarryman's sledgehammer
recalls that Bernuy de Porreros was once famous for stone extraction
(porra, "sledgehammer"; porreros, I guess, "those who use a
sledgehammer", that is quarrymen). The Cross of Saint James represents
St. James, the patron saint of the village. The waves symbolize the
different sources that water the village.
The sinister part of the arms recalls that Bernuy de Porreros belonged
to the Community of the Town and Land of Segovia, symbolized by the
Segovia Roman aqueduct, taken from the arms of the town.
