University of La Laguna was founded in 1817 as Universidad Literaria de San Fernando.
The symbols of ULL are prescribed in Article 8 of the university's Statutes, part of Decree No. 230, adopted on 22 December by the Government of the Canary Islands and published on 29 December 2000 in the official gazette of the Canary Islands, No. 170, pp.19,246-19,281 (text), as follows.
1. Without prejudice of the prescriptions of the Regulations of Honors and Distrinctions on the original coat of arms and its use, the coat of arms of University of La Laguna is round, argent with a fimbriation gules. In the center, King St. Ferdinan in his majesty on a throne or with a hassock azure the feet on a cushion purpure crowned and shoed or with a scepter or in the dexter hand clad with a cloak gules fimbriated or in the sinister hand an orb azure crowned or. The shield surrounded by the writing in letters sable starting with a cross: + REG. SANCTI FERDINANDI VNIVERSITATIS CANARIARVM STEMMA.
2. The flag of University of La Laguna is its traditional flag, purple, with its coiat of arms placed like the coat of arms on the Spanish flag.
