The municipality of Alsodux (125 inhabitants in 2020; 2,000 ha) is located 20 km north-west of Almería.

Alsodux, successively known as Sodu, Zoduk, El Soduz and Alsodue, was first mentioned in the 12th century by the geographer Al Idrisi, as a strategic place watching river Nacimiento and access to Guadix. From 1232 onward, Alsodux was one of the ten settlements forming the "taha" of Marchena.
After the surrender of Baza and the Almería Capitulations (1489), Alsodux was offered by the Catholic Monarchs to Gutierre de Cardenas y Chacón, as a reward for his support during the Reconquest.

Symbols of Alsodux

The flag and arms of Alsodux, adopted on 12 February 2020 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 27 February 2020 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Resolution issued on 5 March 2020 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 17 March 2020 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 52, pp. 41-42 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 3:2 (length to width), divided into five horizontal stripes; the central stripe, red; the two adjacent stripes, white; the upper stripe, green, and the lower stripe, blue. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Spanish shield. Per pale, 1. Azure a clock tower argent port proper, 2. Vert a mount sable fimbriated or on a base proper surmounted by three orange flowers argent slipped and leaved of the same botonny or. Grafted in base, Or the letters "VI" sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown closed.

The flag uses the main colors of the coat of arms, green, white and blue. The central red stripe alludes to the color of the grains of pomegranate (granada), recalling the old Kingdom of Granada, and to the red cross featured on the municipal and provincial coats of arms of Almería.

The coat of arms features the village's landmark, the clock tower. The orange flower on a green background represents agriculture in general, and, specifically, citriculture, which is Alsodux' main source of income.The mount represents the hill locally known as Monte Negro (Black Mount), while the brown base represents the soil.
In base, the Roman numeral "VI", used for the sake of aesthetic, recalls the popular etymology of the village name, "sodux". The popular etymology, turned down by modern scholars, relates Alsodux to the Arab word "al-sadis" or its Al-Andalus dialectal form, "sodux", "sixth"; Alsodux would have been the sixth village part of the "taha" of Marchena.
