Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) field stands a red tower double embattled and flanked by ascending embattled walls, masoned black, of the same colour. The gate is open and topped by a silver (=white) portcullis.
Meaning:
According to source the coat of arms is based upon the image from medieval main seal and had been adopted in the 19th century. The choice of the colours, being those of the bishops of Münster, was made later in 1909.
Indeed there existed another coat of arms showing a red fess in a golden field. The fess was superimposed by a black trident. Its existence is proven by a flag from 1680, municipal coins from the 16th century and numerous seals. By misinterpretation of the trident arose the idea of a portcullis, which sometimes was interpreted as a gridiron, a torture instrument and attribute of St.Lorenz, the local patron saint.
In 1952 there was a great discussion in the city. In the end the officials favoured and chose the new pattern.

Description of coat of arms:
It is a plain golden (=yellow) shield. The red chief is superimposed by three golden 5-point stars ordered horizontally.
Meaning:
According to source the colours red and yellow are those of the bishopric of Münster, the former sovereign. The pattern is taken from the seal of the lords of Vernhove, a vassal of the bishop maintaining the protection of an abbey of nuns, which had been established in 840 and played the most impotant role from 1495 until 1810. Freckenhorst gained city rights in 1969 and then also the coat of arms was approved by Regierungspräsident Münster.
