Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The current arms show in a golden(=yellow) shield a riding St.Martin sharing his coat with a beggar. All figures are red.
Meaning:
According to source St.Martin is patron saint of the city and the local parish church. The colours of the flag and the coat of arms are those of the archbishopric of Münster, and of nowadays Warendorf county as well.
The coat of arms was granted by the king of Prussia on 25 June 1910. The colours then had been red and silver, the colours of Prussian province of Westphalia. The scene was placed upon a red hill and the shield was topped by a mural crown. In 1977 the coat of arms above the door of the townhall showed however the whole ensemble in a golden field. According to source Hupp had changed the background colour arbitrarily.
According to source in 1965 the mural crown, the so called French shield and the hilltop were abolished.
