The coat of arms was approved on 14 June 1962. The black imperial eagle refers to the former Imperial city of Schweinfurt, and its possessions in the county. Most of these areas did not become part of Bavaria before 1814. The base of the arms shows the Franconian rake from the arms of the Bishopric of Würzburg, as the bishops ruled a large part of the county until 1803.
